As long as controversial Indian preacher Zakir Naik behaves himself, the Malaysian government will allow him to stay as he has permanent residency in the country.
“As long as he is not creating any problem, we will not deport him because he has permanent resident status,” Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said at a press conference today.
He was speaking at Yayasan Perdana in Putrajaya after a Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting.
It was reported yesterday that the Indian Foreign Ministry had confirmed that a formal request has been made to Malaysia for the extradition of Zakir.
Mahathir also commented on businessperson Jho Low, who is wanted by the Malaysian police for his alleged involvement in the 1MDB case.
“I have not been following the voyages of Low so I do not know where he is.
“It is up to the people tasked with tracing him and dealing with all the problems caused by 1MDB,” he said.
Yesterday, inspector-general of police (IGP) Mohamad Fuzi Harun said Low is now in Macau.
The police have been searching for Low in Hong Kong and they discovered that Low had left for Macau when they arrived.
The special administrative region of Macau does not have any extradition treaties with other countries. -Mkini
