Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad said that the gathering by Gerakan Pembela Ummah tomorrow in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur appears to be an attempt to create tensions.
“I don’t think they are trying to “membela ummah” (protect the faithful). This group thinks that they are the only ones helping Muslims and Malays.
“This is causing tensions […] they are trying to give the impression that Malays are in danger, despite the fact that the position of Malays and Islam is guaranteed,” he said.
Khalid, who is also the Amanah information chief, said this when asked for his opinion on the gathering which organisers said involved 300 Muslim NGOs and would attract some 7,000 people.
The theme of the event reads “Malaysia Baru Pasca PRU14: Islam Melayu Terancam!” (The New Malaysia post-GE14: Islam and Malays threatened!)
Previously, the organiser said the gathering was mainly to oppose possible attempts by the federal government to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate.
Other government decisions, including the appointment of non-Muslims as the chief justice and the attorney-general are expected to be scrutinised during the event as well.
On the future development of Kampung Baru, Khalid said he will be meeting Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad soon to discuss the latter’s plans.
“The prime minister doesn’t want a concrete jungle in Kampung Baru. He wants to preserve its Malay identity.
“Therefore we need a different approach […] therefore, I will be discussing the matter with the prime minister to include his vision (for the area),” he said.
Khalid was speaking to reporters after attending a briefing by the Kampung Baru Development Board this afternoon.
