Heavy losses in the recent polls see a change in the state party leadership.
GEORGE TOWN: Bukit Mertajam Umno division chief Musa Sheikh Fadzir has been made Penang Umno chief for the next two years, taking over from Zainal Abidin Osman.
Bagan Umno division chief Shaikh Hussein Mydin has been made state Umno deputy chief, while former Teluk Bahang assemblyman Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah is made state party secretary.
Musa thanked the leadership for entrusting him with the state party leadership, saying the first order of day was to listen to the grassroots.
“After our loss, we have to carry on. We need to sit down together with other division heads, decide what direction we should take.
“We will nevertheless go on as an opposition party and we will try our best to give a proper check and balance to Pakatan Harapan,” he said.
Umno was reduced to four seats in Penang in the last polls, a sharp drop from the 13 seats it won in the 2013 general election.
The current four seats comprise of two state seats in the 40-member assembly and another two parliamentary seats held by their incumbents.
In the 2013 polls, Umno held 10 state seats and three parliamentary seats. -FMT
