PKR Sg Kandis candidate confident of countering 'anti-royal’ narrative

SG KANDIS POLLS | Pakatan Harapan candidate for Sungai Kandis Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni is confident of countering BN’s expected campaign narrative of the ruling coalition being bent on removing the powers of royal institution.
"I am confident that we have our own approach to explain this issue.
"Because we know that this is a very sensitive issue among the Malays," Zawawi told reporters when met after nomination at the Shah Alam City Council hall today.
"If we give them the right explanation, Insya Allah the Malays can accept the current situation," he added, pointing out that the position of the rulers is enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
Sungai Kandis is a Malay-majority seat, with the community making up 72 percent of the 50,800 registered voters in the 14th general election.
Zawawi will be going up against BN’s Lokman Noor Adam in the Aug 4 by-election.
Earlier this week, Lokman (right in photo) led a protest near Bukit Aman when the Yang di-Pertuang Agong was officiating the first session of the 14th Parliament sitting.
The protest was held in “solidarity” with the Agong, and to give him "moral support" in the wake of alleged attacks against the royal institution.
He also told Malaysiakini that Sungai Kandis voters should back him if they do not want to see the rights of Malays, Muslims and the rulers to be further eroded.
Although Harapan retained Selangor in GE14 with a supermajority of 51 seats in the 56-seat assembly, Zawawi said he would not take his campaign for granted as there remain challenges which must be faced.
"Our main challenge is still the fact that the area is now very large after the redelineation exercise, as well as the people's mood to come out to vote," he said.
When asked about the main thrusts of his campaign, Zawawi said there are still basic infrastructure problems in the constituency, such as flood mitigation and rubbish collection, which could be better addressed.
The by-election for the Sungai Kandis state seat comes following the passing of former PKR incumbent Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei on July 2, due to lymphoma.
On May 9, Shuhaimi obtained 23,998 votes to win the Malay-majority seat, defeating BN's Kamaruzzaman Johar (11,518 votes), PAS' Mohd Yusof Abdullah (7,573) and PRM's Hanafiah Husin (76). - Mkini
