PARLIAMENT | Batu Pahat MP Mohd Rashid Hasnon and Teluk Intan MP Nga Kor Ming have been elected as the new Dewan Rakyat deputy speakers.
Both names were proposed by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and seconded by Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Opposition leader Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had proposed BN's own deputy speaker candidate, Beluran MP Ronald Kiandee.
However, Kiandee – the previous deputy speaker – did not receive the vote of the majority.
PKR's Rashid was formerly the Penang deputy chief minister, while Nga is the Perak DAP chief.
Rashid received 171 votes while Nga received 124 votes. Kiandee only managed 93.
When met at the Parliament lobby, Nga reaffirmed his commitment to the reform agenda outlined in the Pakatan Harapan manifesto.
