Recalled drugs in the UK not sold in Malaysia

Health ministry says seven valsartan drug products, used for high blood pressure and congestive heart failure, should not be found in the Malaysian market.
The health ministry says it takes great care over the quality, safety and effectiveness of all pharmaceuticals before they are approved for registration locally.
PETALING JAYA: The health ministry says seven drug products recalled in the United Kingdom are not sold in Malaysia and should not be found in the market.
The seven drug products are valsartan drug products, used in the treatment of high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.
It is available in Europe in 80mg and 160mg capsules, and 40mg, 80mg, 160mg and 320mg film-coated tablets.
The director-general of health, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, said the seven drug products were not registered with the Malaysia Drug Control Authority.
The statement was issued in response to a “drug alert” by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency which called for a recall of the drugs after an impurity was found in the drug manufactured in China, which could potentially cause cancer.
“The health ministry takes great care over the quality, safety and effectiveness of all pharmaceuticals before they are approved for registration,” said Hisham, adding the ministry constantly monitors all pharmaceuticals in the market.
He advised the public to use drugs which are registered with the Malaysia Drug Control Authority through its website www.npra.moh.gov or call the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency at 03-78835560 / 61 / 62 or the National Pharmaceutical Call Centre at 1800 88 6722. -FMT
