SHAH ALAM: The mild mannered Zawawi Ahmad Mughni lambasted Barisan Nasional for claiming Pakatan Harapan does not protect the rights of the Malay community.
Zawawi, 48, who is the Pakatan candidate in the Sungai Kandis by-election, said Malays benefited the most from all the people-centric policies implemented by the Selangor state government since 2008.
"It's the Malays who benefited the most from all the 43 programmes implemented under the state's Peduli Rakyat initiative.
"In addition, 95 percent of beneficiaries under the state's entrepreneurial development programmes were also Malays," Zawawi told a press conference on Thursday (July 26).
.He said the baseless allegations made by the Opposition will not deter the state government from continuing to help the Malays.
He said Umno and Barisan candidate Datuk Lokman Noor Adam must not try to be a hero by claiming to be the one to defend Malay rights in Selangor.
"It is very clear Malay voters have rejected Umno because they were fed up with the leaders conduct.
"The rejection was seen in the 2008 general election where Umno got only 18 out of the 56 seats (in the state legislative assembly) and it worsened in the 2013 general election when the seats were reduced to 12," said Zawawi.
He said Umno was in a very critical situation now with only four seats in the state legislative assembly due to the people's rejection in Selangor, especially by the Malays.
On former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's visit to the constituency on Wednesday (July 25), Zawawi said his (Najib's) presence was akin to a reminder to the electorate why they had rejected Barisan.
"His presence here will increase the support for me as the people had clearly rejected Najib.
"I was made to understand from sources that some of his scheduled visits here had to be cancelled because he was not welcome," claimed Zawawi.
Zawawi also added many PAS grassroots and even Umno members had called or visited him to convey their support.
The Sungai Kandis by-election was called after PKR's incumbent assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei passed away on July 2 due to lymphoma cancer.
Polling is on Aug 4.
In GE14, Mat Shuhaimi got more votes than the Umno and PAS candidates combined.
He won the seat by garnering 23,998 votes, defeating Umno's Datuk Kamaruzzaman Johari (11,518 votes), PAS' Mohd Yusof Abdullah (7,573 votes) and Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM)'s Hanafiah Husin (76 votes).-Star
