KUALA LUMPUR: Counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, who is representing former prime minister Najib Razak, has questioned the prosecution team’s preparedness in pursuing its case against his client.
He believed the prosecution team, led by Attorney-General Tommy Thomas, was still looking for evidence in the case.
“We requested February and March to have the hearing.
“We want it earlier if possible, but the weird thing is, the one prosecuting us is not prepared.
“Perhaps, still looking for evidence,” he said when met by reporters after the court proceeding today.
Najib was charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) and one count of abuse of power over funds totalling RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.
He pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was allowed bail of RM1 million in two sureties and also ordered to surrender his two travel documents to the court.
The bail was allowed to be paid in two instalments with RM500,000 paid by his children, Nooryana Najwa and Norashman, at 2.45pm today, and the balance to be settled by Monday.
High Court Judge Mohd Sofian Abd Razak, who presided over the case, set 19 days, Feb 18-28, March 4-8, and March 11-15 next year, for the trial.
On the gag order sought by the defence, Shafee said it was to stop anyone from making statements to the media and to avoid interfering with the court proceedings.
“We asked for a gag order against people who have nothing to do with the case from making statements to the media… even Najib cannot make any comments in the media,” he added. -FMT
