Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid has said that the Unified Examination Certificate should be recognised if holders of the qualification obtain SPM credits in BM and History.
He said the previous BN government had provided leeway in allowing UEC holders to enter teachers’ training institutes.
"However, this was on condition that general requirements were fulfilled: those exceling in BM and passing History at the SPM level, and teaching only at the SJKC," the former education minister said in a statement today.
He added that the Umno’s stand is clear that all education systems in the country must operate based on what is outlined in the Education Act 1996.
"The Malaysian education system appropriates BM as the primary language of instruction, the national curriculum and examinations.
"The education that is given (in the Malaysian education system) is varied and comprehensive in scope to fulfil the country’s needs and to foster national unity through cultural, social, economic and political developments in line with the principles of Rukunegara.”
The UEC, which is issued to graduates of Chinese independent high schools, is currently recognised by local private higher education institutions and many universities overseas, as well as the Sarawak government.
The Malacca government had recently announced it will begin recognising the UEC as a formal qualification for entry into state civil service.
Pakatan Harapan in its manifesto had said it would ensure the UEC can be used for entry into public higher education institutions "provided that applicants have a credit in Bahasa Melayu at the SPM level."
Incumbent education minister Maszlee Malik said that before making any decisions, the ministry will take into account the views of various parties as well as the interests of BM and national harmony. - Mkini
