The Council of Action and Coordination of Malaysian Islamic NGOs gathered at Masjid Negara today and called on muftis to be vocal in voicing out issues pertaining to Muslims in the country.
The council's coordinator, Yahya Long Ali, said the government and the opposition are divided on issues related to the sensitivities of the Muslim community, which remain unresolved.
Among the issues that he claimed remained unresolved are the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT) culture, the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) (Amendment) 2016 Bill or RUU 355, tahfiz schools and the upholding of the rights of Islamic Institutions and the monarchy.
"Muftis are prominent and they have the prerogative to issue fatwa, so we want them to be vocal and take stern actions when there are issues involving Islam.
"We don't want them to just follow the instructions from their 'bosses'," Yahya said at the gathering of some 50 people at National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.
He claimed that representatives of 30 NGOs were present at the gathering, including those from Wanita Intifada Negara and Gerakan Pembela Ummah Kedah.
Yahya said that even under the former BN government, Muslim leaders from the government and the opposition have been debating on RUU 355 but until now there is no solution to it as they are not united when it comes to issues pertaining to Islam.
The gathering, which was planned to be a rally, was disrupted by a heavy downpour, which led the small crowd to take shelter under the roof at the entrance to the mosque. - Mkini
