PARLIAMENT | Lim Guan Eng's role as finance minister has been reduced to that of a mere bookkeeper in Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's cabinet, according to MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong.
The Ayer Hitam MP told the Dewan Rakyat today that the finance minister's powers have been diluted.
"Public perception is that the finance minister's powers have been reduced to that of a bookkeeper, given that the agencies previously under the Finance Ministry have been transferred to Azmin Ali's Economic Affairs Ministry, which has more power,” he added.
Wee said the government must explain the distribution of powers between the two ministries.
"The companies set up under MOF Inc now have two bosses.
“So who has power over them and who will issue instructions and send messages to them?" he asked when debating the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's address.
Lim is a qualified accountant with a background in economics.
Wee also questioned the need to establish an Entrepreneur Development Ministry, when its role could be incorporated into the Economic Affairs Ministry.
He also pointed out that the current cabinet size was not much different from that of the previous government despite Pakatan Harapan's pledge to downsize in order to cut government expenditure.
"I don't see a total of 26 ministries and 29 ministers being much more different than before," he added.
There were 35 ministers and 27 deputy ministers running 24 ministries during the previous administration under former premier Najib Abdul Razak. -Mkini
