AMID scathing criticisms over his inability to speak fluently in Bahasa Melayu, a video has emerged online of Attorney-General Tommy Thomas giving a speech in the national language.
The video was posted on Facebook by a Shamsul Sulaiman today, and as of 5pm, has garnered 7,800 views.
Thomas is seen addressing the Judicial and Legal Service Officers Association (Jalsoa) at a Hari Raya event in the video. He speaks at length on the functions of the association and congratulates the members for their stellar services, in a speech lasting four minutes.
The crowd cheer him on as he reads out the prepared speech, earning thunderous applause when he wishes them “Selamat Hari Raya”.
Malaysians on social media praised Thomas for his use of Bahasa Melayu even if his command of the language was rusty.
“Obviously, he can speak in BM, a man that educated would have passed his BM but being in such high level of law proceedings which involves conversing in English most of the time, it is normal that he would be rusty, especially when you don’t speak it often,” Arvin Raj posted.
Another user, Yanti Osman said Thomas’ attempt at speaking Malay was “cute” .
The newly-minted AG has come under fire from Malay right-wing groups over his lack of mastery in the national anguage.
When former prime minister Najib Razak was charged earlier this month, Thomas was heckled by Najib’s supporters when he held a press conference in English.
