SG KANDIS POLLS | Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari has reassured that he will not abuse any state agencies to campaign for PKR candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni.
In his speech to launch Pakatan Harapan's by-election operations centre in Bukit Kemuning here, Amirudin said he would assist the campaign to reach some 52,000 registered voters in his capacity as a PKR leader.
"Don't be afraid, I'm a Harapan leader.
"If there is an official state government function, I will not mix (with campaigning activities)... there will not be any party flags," said the Sungai Tua assemblyperson.
At a press conference later, Amirudin also clarified that he was still allowed to use his official car to travel during the campaign period.
"But that (use of official car) is not the main issue... I don't use any agencies to give out cash or goodies to the voters," said Amirudin when it was pointed out that he had earlier arrived at the location in his official car.
"Don't be rigid for that. Maybe next time I will come on a bicycle or a motorcycle," he quipped.
Harapan as then federal opposition pact had often hit out at the BN administration for alleged abused of state and government machinery for campaign purposes.
Meanwhile, Zawawi earlier said he had attended 12 functions on the first official day of campaigning and so far remained confident that PKR can retain the seat with a bigger majority compared to its performance in GE14.
"One of my main focus would be to build the community based on religious principles, no matter what their religion may be.
"I believe that the people must be developed holistically, not just in terms of wealth, work or otherworldly means," said the religious school headmaster.
Also present at the launch were Harapan leaders and elected representatives, including Selangor Bersatu chief Abdul Rashid Asari, Selangor Harapan elections director Dr Xavier Jeyakumar and Amanah secretary-general Anuar Tahir.
Zawawi will be going up against BN’s Lokman Noor Adam and independent Murthy Krishnasamy in the Aug 4 by-election.
The by-election for the Sungai Kandis state seat comes following the passing of its former incumbent Shuhaimi Shafiei on July 2, due to lymphoma.
On May 9, PKR's Mat Shuhaimi obtained 23,998 votes to win the Malay-majority seat, defeating BN's Kamaruzzaman Johar (11,518 votes), PAS' Mohd Yusof Abdullah (7,573) and PRM's Hanafiah Husin (76). - Mkini
