Gombak MP Azmin Ali expressed concern, during a meeting with his supporters last night, that plans to form a new coalition with the opposition could be scuttled if delays drag out.
This came after he revealed that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong needed time to sort out the new proposed government.
Yesterday, Azmin representing his faction in PKR, as well as leaders from Bersatu, Umno, PAS, GPS and Warisan had gone to Istana Negara, purportedly to show that they now have majority support to form a new ruling coalition.
The outcome of the meeting was not made public but Azmin in the meeting revealed that more time was needed.
"Give Mahathir and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong chance to discuss as they need a bit of time.
"But I reminded - not to take too long as there are quarters trying to buy MPs. I know that person (trying to buy MPs), he was my boss," he said to laughter from the supporters gathered in a room at Sheraton Hotel in Petaling Jaya late last night.
Azmin claimed that the PKR MPs aligned to him had received calls and offers, including the positions of deputy prime minister and finance minister.
It is for the same reason, he said, that they could not wait.
"Recently, the higher-ups received word from the authorities that the relevant party has received tens of millions (of ringgit) to buy (MPs). So, we cannot wait for long, due to this problem.
"God willing, the parties who met the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in the evening have vowed that they will be steadfast in their principle and God willing, we will see a new coalition that can guarantee a better future," he said.
In the meeting, Azmin also denied cutting deals with Umno and PAS to join the new coalition.
He claimed that criminal prosecution against personalities from those parties will continue.
"We will not compromise. There is no deal with Umno or PAS.
"Anyone facing various charges in court, they (the charges) will remain and they must face them in court. This was our condition.
"Anyone facing charges, if they feel they have not done wrong, then go through the (legal) process. Let the court decide. It is not our job to save them,' he said.
If the new coalition materialises, it will likely exclude the DAP, Amanah and PKR as the three parties were left out of the loop during the flurry of political meetings prior to the audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday.
An announcement on the new coalition was supposed to be made yesterday but was later called off. - Mkini
