DAP man slams govt bodies over reports of Lynas’ licence renewal

Sources claim that the government has agreed to renew Lynas Malaysia’s licence for another three years.
PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Wong Tack said both the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) and the Department of Environment (DoE) would be rendered irrelevant if Putrajaya had indeed extended Lynas Malaysia’s licence.
The Bentong MP said the energy, science, technology, environment and climate change ministry would have “hastily” extended the operating licence based on “lies, manipulations, misleading information and propaganda” among others.
Wong Tack, who is an outspoken critic of the rare earths plant, said that whatever action the AELB and DoE take on issues like foreign plastic wastes, chemical spills and pollution would now be “merely acts of hypocrisy”.
He reiterated that Lynas’s radioactive waste was unsafe and radioactive contamination was the most extreme environmental hazard.
“Radioactive pollution from Lynas’ wastes pose serious threats to the health of our children, eco-system, water resources and economic development of our country, in perpetuity.
“The AELB and DoE have failed the people all these years. Failure to exercise their duties as regulators is a serious crime against humanity,” he said in a statement.
Last week, Reuters quoted two sources familiar with the matter as saying that the government has agreed to renew Lynas Malaysia’s licence for another three years.
In January, Lynas said it had received consent from Pahang, where the plant is located, with regards to a site for a storage facility.
Wong Tack urged his colleagues, especially those who took to the streets with the people, to step forward and make a clear stand on Lynas.
“It is time to fulfil our duties and promises to the people.” - FMT
