Electricity thieves cost RM5 mil losses in Sabah, says power company

SESB acting managing director Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid (second from left) speaking to the media in Kota Kinabalu today.
KOTA KINABALU: Power thieves have been responsible for losses of about RM5 million over a period of three years, said power utility company Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) today.
SESB acting managing director Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said they discovered more than 800 incidences of power thefts since 2017 in the state.
He said SESB was currently investigating 31 theft cases. Some culprits, he added, had been taken to court.
“These thefts involve mostly customers who tamper with their power meters. Such people will face charges,” he told reporters here.
He said two of the cases, involving an entertainment outlet and a shophouse unit, were taken to court recently.
The magistrate had ruled on Jan 2 that SESB was entitled to RM8,800 from the entertainment outlet. The court ordered the owner of the shophouse unit to pay RM23,109.94 to SESB for tampering with the electricity meters.

Abdul Nasser warned that SESB would not hesitate to come down hard on those found to have flouted the law. - FMT
