EXPRESSING disappointment over Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s call for US President Donald Trump to step down, the US Embassy in Malaysia said the remarks were not in the constructive spirit that served as a long-standing foundation between both countries.
“We are disappointed regarding the prime minister’s comments regarding President Trump,” the embassy tweeted.
“The prime minister’s remarks were not in the spirit of the constructive dialogue that has long served as the foundation of US-Malaysia relations.”
The embassy added bilateral ties between the two countries have produced outcomes important regionally and globally as the two countries have co-operated on issues such as security, trade, education, public health and environment.
Yesterday Dr Mahathir said he hoped Americans will make a better decision as Trump eyes re-election this year.
The prime minister urged Trump to resign over allegations that he abused US foreign policy to undermine a political rival, and his controversial Middle East peace plan, seen as pro-Israel.
“Resign. I wish Americans will make a better decision” in the next election, he told reporters after opening an MPs’ conference on Palestine in Petaling Jaya.
“Here is a man (Trump) who denigrated his roles and policies, trying to use foreign pressure to win the election. That is acceptable in America, but it is not acceptable here.”
