Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman pointed to himself as a successful product of the Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) programme.
"This is my personal opinion, and I have shared this with the prime minister, I agree with the prime minister.
“I was one of the youths who went through PPSMI and at the same time, I was successfully educated through PPSMI until now I am successful.
“I say PPSMI has helped me and my generation a lot, that is why I support it,” he said in a press conference after attending a Malaysian Future Leaders School programme in Kuala Lumpur today.
Syed Saddiq said his mastery of the English language was quite weak at that time, but he managed to use what he learned from PPSMI all the way to university.
However, he acknowledged that this is a controversial topic but stressed that he believed Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad sincerely wanted to improve the youths’ education with this move.
“He (Mahathir) is sincere in wanting to ensure that youths, specifically those in rural areas, can get the best education, the best exposure so that they can be as competitive as others when they enter into university or to the workforce in the future,” he said.
Regardless, he said, this matter will be discussed in the cabinet first before any decisions are made.
Mahathir, who is acting education minister, had previously said he wanted to bring back teaching and learning of science and mathematics in English.
Many critics have since voiced out against this, describing PPSMI as a step backwards and not effective in increasing students’ mastery of the English language.
Critics of this policy have included a number of Pakatan Harapan leaders, many of whom were part of the protests against PPSMI back in 2008. - Mkini
