BUKIT MERTAJAM: A factory worker was killed and his wife seriously injured after their motorcycle was hit from behind by a car driven by a man believed to be drunk at Km140.2 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) near the exit to Perai here yesterday.
Khairizul Mohamad Noor, 39, died on the spot in the 5am incident. His wife, Zuriana Hasan, 36, was taken to Seberang Jaya Hospital, where she was reported to be in a critical condition.
The 34-year-old driver was detained and a breath test found that he was driving under the influence of alcohol, Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said.
He said the driver, who was not injured, was taken to the same hospital for a blood test.
He urged witnesses to help police in their investigation.
A family member of the couple, who wanted to be identified only as Khairuddin, said they were on their way home to Butterworth after dinner with the wife’s two younger siblings.
Khairuddin said they have five children. - FMT
