Najib's SRC trial: Not right to buy luxury watch with purported Saudi donation, Anifah tells court

KUALA LUMPUR: It is not right to purchase a luxury watch using money from a purported Saudi Arabia donation, the High Court was told.
Former foreign minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman (pic) candidly said this during cross-examination by lead prosecutor Datuk V. Sithambaram at the SRC International trial here on Thursday (Feb 13).
Earlier in his witness statement, Anifah had said that the late King Abdullah Abdulaziz Al-Saud did not want his monetary contribution to be “vaguely disbursed” as it may pose problems in its disbursement.
Sithambaram asked the witness to explain what it meant with “vaguely disbursed”, to which Anifah replied: “I should ask King Abdullah about that.”
Sithambaram: You also said it may pose problems in the disbursement. You said Najib told you this. What does this mean?
Anifah: It must be done according to what is right.
Sithambaram then asked Anifah whether it was right to buy a watch for close to half a million ringgit, clearly referring to a Chanel watch Datuk Seri Najib Razak had bought for his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor for US$130,625 (RM466,330.11) as a birthday present in 2014.
“Of course not,” Anifah said.
Najib is facing seven charges – three for criminal breach of trust, one for abuse of power and three for money laundering involving SRC International Sdn Bhd funds totalling RM42mil.
The hearing continues before Justice Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali on Monday (Feb 17). - Star
