The Protect Taman Desa Coalition claimed that migrant workers have been abandoned without care at the site of a condominium project which partially collapsed last week.
However, the project's developer has denied this.
The media coordinator for the coalition, M Gunasekar, claimed that the workers at The Address were not receiving food, medical care or their wages.
"A big number of foreign workers were seen inside the site, without proper food and medical attention.
"The foreign maid of a nearby condo resident, who is in contact with the workers, said there are a number of workers stuck inside the project site, with no food or pay," Gunasekar said in a statement last night.
He added that residents were doing a charity drive to help feed the workers and he also urged the authorities to investigate the matter.
Malaysiakini has contacted the Human Resources Ministry for comment.
Meanwhile, Malay Mail cited The Address project manager Seymour Chew as denying the allegations.
“Actually, my people, all the management people are still at the site," he said.
Asked whether the migrant workers were being looked after, Chew replied: "Of course, of course, of course."
Last Friday, the condominium project suffered a partial collapse. Two construction workers were rescued after being trapped under the debris.
Following this, a stop-work order was issued for the project.
If completed, The Address will have three towers of 30 storeys each on a narrow strip of land that was once Tenaga Nasional Bhd reserve land.
Taman Desa residents had, prior to the construction, mounted a fierce campaign against the project because the reserve land was designated as a green lung under the Kuala Lumpur Master Plan 2020.
However, their protest was not heeded and their lawsuits against the Kuala Lumpur City Hall were not successful. - Mkini
