Resign as PM for fresh elections, interfaith council tells Dr M

The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism urges Malaysians of all faiths to pray for the country’s leaders.
PETALING JAYA: An interfaith council has called on Dr Mahathir Mohamad to resign as prime minister to make way for fresh elections instead of forming a backdoor government.
The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) said Mahathir should follow democratic principles and the rule of law if there really was a plan to reorganise the ruling government.
“MCCBCHST appeals to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to use discretionary powers under the constitution and to order a dissolution of the Parliament and call for fresh elections.
“MCCBCHST pledges its full loyalty to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and our beloved country Malaysia,” it said in a joint statement today.
It said the rumoured coalition, speculated to be called Perikatan Nasional or Pakatan Nasional, was possibly for the “protection of self-interests”, highlighting that there were leaders currently facing corruption investigations and charges.
The council called on elected representatives to honour the people’s mandate given in the 14th general election and to respect the rule of law.
“MCCBCHST urges all Malaysians of all faiths to offer prayers for our political leaders to have the interest of the whole nation in mind and not selfish political expediency.”
The statement was endorsed by the council’s president Archbishop Julian Leow Beng Kim, Malaysian Gurdwaras Council’s Sardar Jagir Singh, Malaysia Hindu Sangam’s RS Mohan Shan, Federation of Taoist Associations Malaysia’s Dao Zhang Tan Hoe Chieow and Malaysia Buddhist Association’s Venerable Sing Kan.
Yesterday, leaders from PPBM, PAS, Umno and those aligned to PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali had gathered at a hotel in Petaling Jaya amid intense speculation a shift in political loyalties would be announced.
Separately, supporters of PKR president Anwar Ibrahim held a prayer session at his home in Bukit Segambut, where he lashed out at attempts to betray Pakatan Harapan. - FMT
