Top cop lauds tougher laws against drunk-driving

Police have welcomed the government’s decision to consider tightening existing laws to curb the issue of driving under the influence.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Mazlan Mansor (photo) said harsher punishments were needed to tackle drunk-driving.
“We welcome the government’s approach to implementing heavier penalties against drunk-drivers and motorcyclists.
"Harsher laws are needed as a deterrent to those who drink and drive,” Mazlan told reporters after the "Ops Chinese New Year 16 Best District and Contingent Award" in Bukit Aman today.

Mazlan was also asked to comment on a suggestion for drunk motorists to be accorded a life sentence upon conviction.
“We must study this proposal (for life imprisonment), it needs to be discussed as there are specifications to the law,” he said.
On Jan 29, Transport Minister Anthony Loke had said the government agreed in principle to tighten existing laws on driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Loke reportedly said a review and discussion would be held before the proposed amendments are brought to Parliament in June or July.
Among the provisions to be reviewed are Sections 41, 44 and 45 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Meanwhile, civil rights lawyer Syahredzan Johan said tougher laws should be accompanied by strict enforcement and surveillance.
At present, drunk-driving is punishable under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act, which carries a jail sentence of between three and 10 years and a fine of between RM8,000 and RM20,000.
A severely inebriated person who is not driving but is in the driver's seat of a vehicle can also be fined under Section 45 of the same Act with a fine of up to RM1,000 and up to three months jail. - Mkini
