Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has lambasted the Palestinian peace deal as a one-sided affair hatched by the US and Israel without any consultation with the Palestinians.
Speaking at the third conference of the League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds which kicked off this morning, Mahathir (above) said that the plan has "spiked any attempts to bring peace or justice to Palestine and acknowledges only the powerful occupier while completely ignoring the rights of the oppressed."
The peace proposal announced by US President Donald Trump on Jan 28 would give Israel most of what it has sought during the seven decades of conflict since 1948, including the disputed holy city of Jerusalem and nearly all the occupied land on which it has built settlements.
"The deal will never result in a contiguous sovereign Palestinian state, on the contrary, it will only further the domination of an apartheid-like occupation over millions of Palestinians," said Mahathir in his keynote address.
Mahathir went on to compare the occupation to Nazi Germany's occupation of parts of Poland and Czechoslovakia in the run-up to World War II.
"To make things worse, the deal of the century hands over the holy city of Jerusalem on a silver platter to the Israeli side; in absolute disregard for the feelings of millions of Muslims and Christians worldwide," he said.
"Malaysia finds the proposal utterly unacceptable and grossly unjust. It is truly disappointing that after more than seven decades, only one side of the two-state solution has come into form – Israel - while the Palestinian people are still left struggling for justice, peace, and a sovereign state of their own," he added.
This deal will only bring more conflicts to the region, and will antagonise billions of people around the world he concluded. - Mkini
