Wee: Let them decide who should govern

Positive outlook: Dr Wee leaving Istana Negara.
PETALING JAYA: The people should decide who should govern the country, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
“Let the people decide who they want to give the mandate to, and who they believe is capable to steer the country that has been adrift ever since the failure and collapse of the Pakatan Harapan administration, which was self-inflicted.
“At the MCA presidential council meeting, a few hours before I was granted an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (on Tuesday), we decided unanimously to hand back the power to the people to decide who should be the leaders of the country through the dissolution of Parliament.
“However, we are confident whatever the decision by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, it must be obeyed by all the rakyat and it is certain that the decision will be made for the interests of the country as a whole, ” he said on Facebook yesterday. The Ayer Hitam MP added that the proposal to have a unity government would go against the democratic principles the country has always held to.
“It will not guarantee a democratic spirit which we have put in practice for a long time, and it will also erode the process of checks and balances in government.
“I do not wish to see the democratic system in Malaysia develop to the point where there is no role left for the Opposition, and where the Prime Minister is fully supported by all 222 Members of Parliament.
“If the Prime Minister is supported by all the MPs, this means ultimate power is given to the Prime Minister to do whatever he likes with phrases like ‘according to my wishes’ (ikut suka saya), ” he said.
Dr Wee also urged for space to be given to all parties during this transition period, so that the process could be done calmly and smoothly without any threat to public peace. - Star
