KUALA LUMPUR: Mention of the word 1MDB resulted in the government bench going into attack mode at the Dewan Rakyat today.
Lim Guan Eng (DAP-Bagan) was mentioning the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) latest action in connection with 1MDB when Barisan Nasional MPs began shouting him down.
They reminded him about the RM6.3 billion Penang undersea tunnel project which the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating now. Penang is led by a DAP-led government.
Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (BN-Baling) told Lim they would be raising the Penang tunnel issue next week.
Lim had cited news reports of the DoJ confirming that the Topaz yacht, now known as A+, was purchased with funds linked to 1MDB.
Lim said the yacht cost millions of US dollars, prompting Azeez to say that the 1MDB case was ongoing in court.
Azeez teased Lim by saying: “We can talk about bungalow and tunnel.”
Deputy speaker Azalina Othman Said reminded the floor that any case in the courts could not be raised as it would be considered subjudice.
But Lim said he was talking about the Topaz and that this was still not in the courts. “This is not an old case.”
Lim also clarified that he did not sell any national assets when he was the finance minister, prompting Azeez to spring up from his seat to ask who then was responsible for selling some national assets.
Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN-Pasir Salak) also joined in, demanding to know the person who had sold the assets.
Lim replied: “Ask (MP) Gombak.”
Mohamed Azmin Ali, the Gombak MP, was the economic affairs minister in the previous Pakatan Harapan government but switched camps to team up with PPBM, Umno, GPS and PAS to form the new Perikatan Nasional government.
Azmin, who was present, stood up to answer but was unable to do so as other MPs were interrupting and shouting. - FMT
