CORONAVIRUS | Malaysians can resume participation in training for contact sports from July 15, while competitions can begin a month later on Aug 15 said Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob in his briefing from Putrajaya today.
"Non-contact and individual sports competitions, such as motor racing, gymnastics, diving and singles badminton competitions, will also be permitted from July 15," he said.
In making the announcement Ismail stressed that no spectators would be allowed.
"Operators of sports facilities like fields, futsal courts and academies can restart operations from July 15."
"On Saturday, Aug 15, the resumption of competitions for football, rugby, hockey, sepak takraw, squash and basketball will be permitted.
"However, the organising of international sports meets or participation of foreign competitors is still not allowed for now," he said.
Ismail added that a standard operating procedure (SOP) would be put in place, including taking the temperature of players, registering via MySejahtera, and sanitising the arenas.
Contact sports have not been permitted since the movement control order to combat the outbreak of Covid-19 was introduced on March 17.
Arcades, family karaoke can reopen
Meanwhile, Ismail announced that family entertainment venues - like arcades, indoor funfairs, edutainment centres, gyms for children and family karaoke centres - will also be allowed to operate.
An official from the Prime Minister’s Department later informed the media that the reopening date for these premises will be July 15.
Among the SOPs that must be adhered to are body temperature checks; restricting the number of guests based on the size of premises and one-metre social distancing; registering via MySejahtera, and frequent sanitisation.
Venues are also encouraged to allow online and on-the-phone ticket sales.
Pubs and discos, however, will not be allowed to reopen. - Mkini
