GEORGE TOWN: A 42-year-old man who was caught on camera brandishing a hammer at his eight-year-old son was arrested by police yesterday following a report lodged by the child’s mother.
In the video, the man who was shirtless and appeared to be drunk, was seen smashing the buttons in an apartment lift before proceeding to threaten the child with the hammer.
The child was seen cowering in fear.
Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong said the man, who has five prior criminal records including two which are drug-related, had been separated from his wife for four years. He also had custody of their only child.
He said the child had been taken to the Penang Hospital to be checked for signs of abuse while the police would seek a remand order to assist the investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for child abuse.
The offence carries a maximum five years’ jail and RM10,000 fine upon conviction. - FMT
