Cops take statements from 6 on NGO activist sexual assault claim

Malaysiakini

Police have recorded statements from six witnesses in regard to sexual assault claims involving a prominent NGO activist.
This followed a statement recorded from the activist on July 9 before he was released on police bail on the same day.
The activist, in his 50s, was said to have "groped and kissed" a 27-year-old trainee doctor last November.
Police criminal investigation department chief Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said they were in the midst of completing the investigation.
"We have recorded statements from six witnesses in the case.
"We are now in the midst of completing the investigation before referring it to the deputy public prosecutor," Nik told Malaysiakini.
According to the complainant's report on Feb 17, the suspect, who is also a doctor, had “groped and kissed” the complainant on the first day the latter reported for work.
Activist denies allegation
The complainant alleged that the suspect had hugged him after hearing of his financial woes when pursuing his degree abroad.
"He then started kissing my neck and cheeks," he claimed.
According to Nik, the complainant made a police report over the incident "for fear his career would be destroyed" as the suspect was his supervisor and was influential in the industry.
The case was being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which covers assault or use of criminal force on a person with the intent to outrage modesty.
This is punishable with up to 10 years in prison, a fine, or whipping.
The activist had denied the allegations as malicious.
Malaysiakini is withholding the name of the activist as the case has not been charged in court. - Mkini
