Jepak MD admitted to paying RM6.5m to Rosmah - witness

Malaysiakini
ROSMAH TRIAL | A witness told the Kuala Lumpur High Court today that Jepak Holdings (Jepak) managing director Saidi Abang Samsudin admitted to paying RM6.5 million to Rosmah Mansor for her assistance in aiding the company to secure a solar hybrid project in Sarawak.
Rayyan Radzwill Abdullah, a Jepak business partner, said the payment was made by Saidi in two separate submissions and Saidi even informed him of the amount after the payment was made.
In his witness statement, Rayyan said the first payment amounting to RM5 million was made through Rosmah's former assistant Rizal Mansor as a contribution to Rosmah "as promised" for helping Jepak obtain a letter of agreement for the project.
He said Saidi told him about it at a meeting in December 2016.
He added that the second payment was made in September 2017 when he and Saidi went to Rosmah's house in Jalan Langgak Duta, Kuala Lumpur, to have a meeting with the wife of then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Rayyan said while they were waiting for Rosmah to come out and meet them, he saw Saidi's driver entering and placing two black backpacks with orange stripes by the sofa in the living room.
During the meeting, he said Saidi told Rosmah that another payment would follow based on the progress payment of the project while Rosmah just nodded and said "okay", without showing surprised at the sum of money.
"Rosmah also did not seem surprised by the gift of money. I understand the money was given by Saidi as a sign of gratitude for awarding the project to Jepak.
"[...] I only knew that the two backpacks contained RM1.5 million in cash after being told by Saidi when we left Rosmah's house," he said.
Apart from that, Rayyan added that on the day the first payment was made, he and Saidi also met Rizal at his house at night and Saidi handed over RM500,000 to Rizal as a reward for helping Jepak in getting the project.
Rayyan also admitted to receiving an RM1 million cheque from Saidi in August 2017 as a "consultant's salary" for all his work in obtaining the project.
“Saidi also once told me that he will pay me about RM10 million more for consulting services for this project, but until now I have not received what was promised," he added.
Rayyan explained that Jepak only received the first payment of RM63 million for the project and the maintenance of diesel generator sets, which Saidi informed him of at the end of July 2017.
Rayyan continued his testimony from yesterday as the 15th witness of the corruption trial involving Rosmah before judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan.
Rosmah faces one charge of soliciting RM187.5 million and two charges of receiving a bribe of RM6.5 million from Saidi through Rizal as a reward for helping the company secure the RM1.25 billion project which covered 369 schools in rural Sarawak and was obtained through direct negotiations with the Education Ministry.
The trial continues.
