Kelantan to host National Environment Day for the first time

Malaysiakini

For the first time, Kelantan is being given the honour of hosting the National Environment Day 2020 which will take place in October.
Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (above) said the yearly national programme has chosen his constituency at Kubang Kerian as the location for the event.
He said the choice of Kelantan as the host was given as a gift as the state is finally one of the states aligned with the federal government after a long time as an opposition state.
InsyaAllah (it will take place) in the third week of October. We have already identified a site for the launching of the National Environment Day in cooperation with the Kelantan state government, Universiti Sains Malaysia and several other agencies.
“This is the first time Kelantan has become a host; firstly because Kelantan is part of the federal government. This is a gift to Kelantan, the continuous efforts by the Kelantan state government which the ministry appreciates and acknowledges.
“We will have it in the Kubang Kerian area. There are other initiatives which will be announced later. Why did we choose Kubang Kerian? Not because of the parliamentarian, but because there is a big project at the state government level which involves that area as well,” Tuan Ibrahim said.
He was speaking in a press conference after a courtesy visit to Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob at the Kota Darulnaim Complex, Kota Bharu, yesterday.
The National Environment Day was introduced after the Langkawi Declaration on the Environment in October 1989.
Since 1991, the Environment and Water Ministry, which was known as the Science, Technology and Environment Ministry at that time, has planned and implemented various activities through the Environment Department as part of the government’s continuous efforts to sow and increase awareness on environmental issues among Malaysians.
The National Environment Day is celebrated every year between Oct 21 and 27, with various environmental-themed programmes. - Mkini
