An unemployed man was today charged at the Selayang Sessions Court with the killing of three cats at a launderette in Kepong last Sunday.
The accused, Muhammad Najwan Zulkefli, 24, claimed trial to the charges this morning.
Najwan is charged under Section 29(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for animal cruelty by allegedly drowning the animals in separate washing machines at the self-service laundrette at an apartment in Desa Aman Puri, Kepong.
He was alleged to have committed the office between 5am to 6.30am on July 12.
The charge pertains to the wanton or unreasonable act which causes unnecessary pain or suffering to an animal.
If convicted, the accused is liable to a fine between RM20,000 to RM100,000, a jail term of up to three years, or both.
However, according to Bernama, judge Syafeera Mohd Said allowed the prosecution’s request for Najwan to be sent to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak for psychiatric observation due to his alleged unstable mental state.
The request was made by Veterinary Services Department prosecutor N Nageswara.
The court reportedly ordered for Najwan to be placed under observation for a month.
The accused was unrepresented and case mention is set for Aug 13. - Mkini
