Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said action had been taken over an incident where a host on Bernama TV called Al Jazeera "Al Jahiliyah" (the ignorant) and told the Qatar-based international broadcaster to "shut up".
"We may disagree with the report of a news channel but we cannot call them with such a name.
"I have been informed by the Bernama chairperson that action has been taken," Saifuddin (above) said in a Twitter post.
The incident came amid an Al Jazeera report about the alleged mistreatment of migrants in the country during the Covid-19 pandemic, which has angered the government.
Police have initiated an investigation against journalists involved in the report while the Immigration Department is tracking down migrant interviewees in the documentary.
During the "Malaysia Petang Ini" programme aired on Bernama TV on Monday, the host claimed "Al Jahiliyah's" report was unethical and without basis.
She then signed off saying "I'm Herleena Pahlavy. Al Jazeera, you shut up".
Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah today maintained that the government had not discriminated against migrant workers during the Covid-19 pandemic. - Mkini
