Mosti to formulate atomic energy bill to update, regulate safety aspect

Malaysiakini

The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MOSTI) through the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) will formulate the Atomic Energy Bill (Ruuta) to update, empower control and regulate safety and use of atomic energy to keep abreast of the latest developments.
Ruuta would replace the existing Atomic Energy Licensing Act 1984 (Act 304), AELB said in a statement today.
“The formulation (of the bill) is in line with international good practices to protect workers, environment, the public and future generations against risks of exposure or pollution.
“Ruuta also gives authority to related bodies to conduct a clearer and holistic inspection and enforcement activities to ensure continued compliance with safety and energy usage regulations,” it said.
Heavier punishments for offences that jeopardise the safety of the public and environment is also in the works, it added.
It clarified that the formulation of Ruuta proves the government’s commitment and transparency to discharge its international obligations in terms of usage of atomic energy for peaceful purposes.
Online public consultation sessions are being conducted by Unified Public Consultation on its website until tomorrow (July 17) to obtain views and supports from all parties.
