Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has refuted a claim that he offered Warisan president Shafie Apdal the deputy prime ministership in exchange for political support.
In a statement today, he referred to Shafie’s (photo, above) claim in the Semporna MP's recent interview reported in Malaysiakini.
“I would like to stress that I have never once offered the deputy prime minister position to him after I became the prime minister in March, as he claimed,” Muhyiddin said.
During the interview, Shafie said that the PM “did not spell out” the offer when he sought Warisan’s backing two weeks after Perikatan Nasional (PN) came into power. However, the Sabah chief minister claimed Muhyiddin “knew” about it.
Today, the PM quashed Shafie’s claim as “untrue”.
“His statement is merely his assumption,” he added.
The PN government was formed following the “Sheraton Move” political coup, that saw Bersatu quit Pakatan Harapan and ally with BN, PAS, GPS, STAR, and PBS.
However, PN’s grip on power has been fraught, leading to threats of a counter-coup and calls for a snap election.
In a key vote to remove the Dewan Rakyat speaker earlier this week, PN was revealed to have a wafer-thin majority of 111 against 109 from the opposition. - Mkini
