A PKR representative today rejected former prime minister (PM) Dr Mahathir Mohamad's claim that leaders of multiracial parties are not suitable to become a Malaysian premier.
Hassan Abdul Karim (above), who is Pasir Gudang MP, said that it should be the other way around as Malaysia is a multiracial country.
"In my opinion, Mahathir's view was wrong. On the contrary, the leader of a multiracial party is the most suitable to be the prime minister of Malaysia. Malaysia is a multiracial country," he said in a statement.
Hassan said he issued the statement to respond to media reports recently, where Mahathir was quoted as saying that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim is not fit to be PM because he leads a multiracial party.
According to Hassan, it is PKR's objective to form a democratic country that is progressive, united, and having a just society. This is part of the party's constitution, he added.
"So, to Mahathir, I want to ask him. Why is a leader who upholds the ambition to make a just society, to form a democratic, progressive, and united country, is not fit to become a PM for Malaysia?"
Citing a series of articles in the PKR constitution, Hassan said it was enough to refute Mahathir's view of rejecting Anwar as PM just because he leads a multiracial party.
He said Mahathir had been mistaken in his understanding.
"(Instead), the one who is unfit to become a PM for Malaysia is the leader of a political party that upholds policies which are discriminatory towards other races, that rejects the idea of a democratic and united country, and that practices policies that are divisive of races and religions just to stay in power," he said.
Recently, Mahathir said in an interview with Sinchew Daily that Pakatan Harapan needs Malay support and that Malays purportedly would not support multiracial parties. - Mkini
