PETALING JAYA: The sultan of Selangor today expressed concern over what he considered violations of health SOPs, as the first month of the recovery movement control order (RMCO) which lifted a nationwide lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic ends this week.
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said he had witnessed the public ignoring guidelines including for the wearing of face masks and social distancing.
In a statement issued by the Selangor palace, the ruler said he was worried that if the public ignored practices under the new norms, there would be a second wave of Covid-19 infections which have so far claimed 121 lives in Malaysia.
He added that a second wave would affect the economy as well as everyday life.
He urged the people to remain disciplined, to always wear face masks, clean their hands with soap and sanitiser, and practise social distancing.
“If you are unwell, do not go out to public places,” he said. “I do not want the people to continue living in a situation where there is a high risk of getting infected, which could be fatal.”
He also reminded the people to appreciate the sacrifices of frontliners, particularly those in hospitals, and not to add to their burdens.
Until a vaccine is found, he said, the people should strive to comply with the SOPs as this is the only way to defeat the virus. - FMT
