ALOR SETAR: A senior federal counsel accused of bribery to fix a case was slapped with an additional charge in the Sessions Court here today.
Lim Cheah Yit, 42, pleaded not guilty to the charge of agreeing to receive a RM100,000 bribe from Goh Kim Heong.
The alleged bribe was to influence the Penang prosecution director to charge Chan Eng Leong with cheating under the Penal Code.
Lim was charged with committing the offence at the Kedah MACC office in Alor Setar under Section 16 (a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ jail and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Judge Murtazadi Amran granted bail of RM10,000 and ordered Lim to report to the MACC offices in Putrajaya once a month until the next court date.
Murtazadi set Aug 19 for mention.
Deputy public prosecutors Mohd Mukhzany Fariz Mohd Mokhtar and Fairus Danial Mazlan prosecuted, and Ang Chun Pin appeared for Lim.
Mukhzany later clarified that Lim was charged in Alor Setar as he had allegedly agreed to accept the bribe in the city.
Yesterday, Lim was charged with soliciting a RM500,000 bribe from Goh at a karaoke centre in Gurney Drive to ensure Chan’s prosecution in a cheating case.
He was also charged with receiving a bribe of RM100,000 at a hotel in Bayan Lepas for the same purpose.
The two charges were read out to Lim at the Sessions Court in Butterworth. He pleaded not guilty. - FMT
