Umno supreme council member Ahmad Shabery Cheek (above) has shot back at Bersatu's Rais Yatim after the latter's outburst calling Umno "ungrateful losers".
Harking back to the days of Semangat 46, Shabery asked the party's former deputy president what was the need for there to be so many Malay parties.
"Brother Rais must state why there is a need for so many Malay parties.
"Before, we jointly dissolved Semangat 46 to be with Umno on the grounds that Malays need to be united," he posted on Facebook.
Semangat 46 was an Umno splinter party born following a divisive party election in 1987. This splinter group was later dissolved and its members rejoined Umno in 1996.
Previously, Umno's Padang Rengas MP Nazri Abdul Aziz suggested that Muhyiddin Yassin rejoin the party as its president.
Earlier today, a Sinar Harian report quoted Rais as ticking off Umno for being "ungrateful" despite the many government positions given to the party.
His criticism came amidst friction between Umno and Bersatu over seat allocations for the 15th general election.
Yesterday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi demanded the return of the Mersing parliamentary constituency in the next general election.
This was after Mersing MP Abdul Latiff Ahmad - who defected from Umno to Bersatu - slighted his former Umno colleagues by claiming Umno was no longer popular in Sabah. He later apologised for the comment. - Mkini
