KUALA LUMPUR: Proposed amendments to increase penalties for those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be tabled to the Cabinet for approval on Friday (July 17), says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
"The Attorney-General's Chambers has completed the draft for the proposed amendments which will be brought to Cabinet on July 17.
"Once approved by Cabinet, the proposed amendments will be tabled during the Dewan Rakyat's current meeting," he said in a reply to a question raised by Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) in Parliament on Wednesday (July 15).
He said the amendments will be to Section 41 to Section 45 of the Road Transport Act, adding that the amendments will include mandatory jail sentences, longer jail time, higher fines and a longer licence suspension period. - Star
