3 DPMs? Let us win first, then we’ll talk, says Ismail

Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob said Barisan Nasional would implement the proposal if it was in the coalition’s manifesto.

KUALA LUMPUR: Ismail Sabri Yaakob has brushed off questions about a proposal to appoint three deputy prime ministers in the new government, saying: “Let us win the general election first.”

He said if the matter was included in the Barisan Nasional (BN) manifesto, it would be implemented if the coalition was returned to power.

Ismail, who is an Umno vice-president, said BN had not named potential candidates for the three posts.

“I don’t know yet. Let us win the elections first. If this is in our manifesto, we will make sure it is implemented. Anyway, wait until we win first. After that, we will discuss,” he said.

Yesterday, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi pledged to appoint three deputy prime ministers, one each from Sabah, Sarawak and the Peninsula, should the coalition win the general election.

However, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the move was unnecessary as it would only increase the government’s expenditure.

Ismail said that was merely a PAS opinion. “We have our own views.”

Ismail said he would look into a proposal that students from Sabah and Sarawak, who study in the Peninsula, be given assistance such as discounted airfares in order for them to return home to vote.

“We will look into it comprehensively.” - FMT
