Anwar and Azmin in war of words over Gombak

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and his former deputy Azmin Ali traded barbs over a contest for the Gombak parliamentary seat.

PETALING JAYA: Anwar Ibrahim and his former deputy Azmin Ali traded verbal blows today over who would contest in the Gombak parliamentary seat at the 15th general election.

Azmin, who is the current MP for Gombak, made a veiled swipe at Anwar, who had said on Wednesday he would not rule out contesting in Gombak.

In response, Azmin challenged “a person who is no longer politically relevant” to contest in his constituency.

However, Anwar warned Azmin that he would not have an easy time defending Gombak and said the latter should take good care of his constituency for the time being.

When asked by reporters about Azmin’s challenge, Anwar said: “Why bother with him? He’s taking care of his area, it’s not easy for him.”

Azmin’s challenge was made at a Bersatu event in Shah Alam. “Do you know who I’m referring to? I won’t mention the person’s name, he is no longer politically relevant,” he said, according to Sinar Harian.

“Those who are interested in Gombak are welcome. You can send your wife, your child,” Azmin said, making a clear reference to Anwar’s wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is MP for Pandan, and their daughter Nurul Izzah, who is MP for Permatang Pauh.

Azmin also riposted Anwar’s remark that he would most likely contest a seat occupied by “traitors”.

“I want to ask, who are the real traitors? Have the people forgotten the Kajang Move?” Azmin said, a reference to an attempt in 2014 to topple Selangor menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim and replace him with Anwar.

The Kajang Move later resulted in Azmin being appointed menteri besar after Khalid lost the support of the state assembly.

Azmin later figured in the Sheraton Move of 2020, when he led a few PKR supporters to align with Bersatu in breaking away from Pakatan Harapan to form a new government. He later joined Bersatu. - FMT
