Anwar ‘misquoted’, PH won’t work with Muhyiddin, says Guan Eng

DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng said opposition parties must accept Anwar Ibrahim as the coalition’s prime ministerial candidate and cooperation with former ally Muhyiddin Yassin was only possible if the PH presidential council reversed its earlier decision.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Anwar Ibrahim was misquoted on potential cooperation with former ally Muhyiddin Yassin, Lim Guan Eng said.

The DAP chairman said the PH presidential council previously decided not to cooperate with either Perikatan Nasional (PN) or Muhyiddin because of his prominent role in the Sheraton Move, which led to the collapse of the PH government in February 2020 after 22 months in power.

“One cannot cooperate with a person with serious trust issues,” Lim said in a statement.

“Cooperation with Muhyiddin or PN can only be entertained if the PH presidential council reverses its previous decision.

“I would oppose any reversal of the previous decision.”

Earlier today, Anwar was reported to have said that PH was open to talks on cooperation with Muhyiddin as well as former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

When asked if he would consider working with Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) chairman Mahathir and PN chairman Muhyiddin once again, Anwar said PH would only align themselves with those who were against corruption and abuse of power.

On potential cooperation with Mahathir, Lim said PH was willing to work with opposition parties provided they unconditionally accept Anwar as PH’s prime ministerial candidate.

“However, the PH presidential council has not been informed of any change of heart by Mahathir,” he said, adding that Anwar had assured him of these principles and explained that he was misquoted.

In a separate statement, PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil said the party had no desire to hold discussions with GTA and PN on possible cooperation in the 15th general election.

Anwar had earlier ruled out working with Mahathir again in the coming polls, citing the latter’s inconsistent stance on certain matters. - FMT
