PETALING JAYA: With Parliament dissolved, the prime minister and his Cabinet remain in a caretaker capacity, Chief Secretary to the Government Zuki Ali said today.
He said the Cabinet did not have the right to make any policy decisions but could continue to implement those already made before Parliament was dissolved.
“The Cabinet can still meet, especially when there are disasters and so on,” he told Berita Harian.
Zuki said the situation was different from the time that previous prime ministers, Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Muhyiddin Yassin, had resigned and their Cabinets were automatically dissolved.
Mahathir tendered his resignation in February 2020 following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government. He was appointed interim prime minister by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, until a new prime minister was chosen.
His successor, Muhyiddin, was appointed on March 1 but he resigned in August 2021 after Umno MPs withdrew support for his Perikatan Nasional government, leading to a new government formed by Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Earlier today, Ismail announced that he had received royal consent for Parliament to be dissolved, nine months short of a full term. The dissolution triggers a general election which must be held within 60 days.
Members of the caretaker Cabinet met today have expressed their commitment to continue carrying out their duties, and thanked their constituents for electing them to the previous Parliament.
Science minister Adham Baba thanked the prime minister for his leadership and pledged to continue carrying out his duties, Bernama reported.
He also thanked his constituents in Tenggara, Johor, saying: “I will continue the tradition of serving the people, especially the people of Tenggara. Thank you Tenggara for trusting me and giving me the mandate to serve as the member of parliament for Tenggara. My heartfelt thanks to the voters,” said Adham in a Facebook posting.
Communications minister Annuar Musa urged the people to fulfill their responsibilities to vote and elect a strong and stable government.
The minister of women, family and community development, Rina Harun, thanked the people of Titiwangsa parliamentary constituency. “I have worked hard to ensure an efficient service. I hope my efforts will continue to benefit the people of Titiwangsa,” she said in her Facebook posting. - FMT
