Dr Mahathir criticises govt for spending budget allocations

PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today described his actions and circumstances that led to the 10th General Election (GE10) in 1999 as entirely different to what has happened now.

He said this following claims of similarities between that year and caretaker Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's decision to dissolve Parliament, paving the way for GE15.

"The government at that time was in good condition. The opposition was also in good condition and we had a fair fight.

"There were no floods and strong winds. No obstruction to voters to go out and vote in masses," he said.

Dr Mahathir said unlike nowadays, fresh from the pandemic, voters face the possibility of floods and strong winds.

He also pointed out that a weak government would stifle foreign investments into the country, adding that this time, Parliament was dissolved just after the tabling of the 2023 Budget.

The government, he claimed, had already spent the allocations from the budget.

"It is wrong because if you are a temporary government, you cannot use governmental fundings.

"Instead, you should have waited until a win is secured in GE15.

"What's happening now is that they are trying to reel in votes by using the money allocated in the budget," Dr Mahathir said. - NST
