Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said BN will not “interfere in judicial affairs” like Pakatan Harapan if his coalition succeeds in claiming Putrajaya after the 15th general election (GE15).
Speaking to the media today, he cited the release of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim in 2018 after Harapan took over the federal government.
He was asked to comment on Pejuang chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s allegation that BN will free imprisoned former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak if they return to power.
“I think the matter was never discussed at the party level. And we will not repeat what Harapan did when they took over the administration.
“We could see how they got involved and interfered in judicial affairs,” said Asyraf (above) during a press conference at the Umno headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
Previously, Mahathir claimed that Umno will seek to free Najib from prison if they win GE15.
To make that matter a reality, the incumbent Langkawi MP said Umno needs to bribe voters to win the election.
In 2018, after Harapan won the 14th general election, the Pardons Board, which was chaired by the Agong and saw then-prime minister Mahathir as a member, granted Anwar a full pardon.
On Sept 2, 2022, Najib, who is serving a 12-year prison sentence after being convicted in the SRC International case, filed for a pardon.
Meanwhile, Asyraf said BN is focusing on efforts to win the hearts of the people by offering an effective election manifesto.
“Umno and BN, we always abide by the law and respect the Constitution.
“And what is more important is that we focus on this election to defend the people.” - NST
