KUALA LUMPUR: After naming party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the candidate for the Tambun parliamentary seat for the 15th General Election, PKR is looking to name another party bigwig to contest in Perak.
Sources said that the party wants former vice-president Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin to contest in Bagan Datuk, where former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is the incumbent.
This, sources said, is part of PKR's plan to strengthen its position in the state.
However, when contacted, Shamsul said he does not have any information on the matter.
"I don't know anything about this but I am ready to contest in any seat that the party wants me to. However, I would prefer to defend my current seat," said Shamsul, who is the incumbent Hang Tuah Jaya member of Parliament.
On Thursday, Anwar announced at the Pakatan Harapan National Convention in Ipoh that he would contest in Tambun.
Speaking to reporters, Anwar said he chose Tambun as, firstly, it was not a PH seat.
"Secondly, I feel responsible for further developing the northern area, including Perak and southern Kedah, to be on par with Penang, Negri Sembilan, Melaka and Selangor," he added. The Tambun seat is held by Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia deputy president.
Faizal won Tambun with a majority of 5,320 votes against Barisan Nasional's Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Mohamad Hanadzlah and Pas's Ibrahim Zakaria. - NST
