PETALING JAYA: Sarawak’s ruling coalition, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, will give its support to the party that can form a strong and stable federal government, according to GPS chairman Abang Johari Openg.
He said the coalition had backed Muhyiddin Yassin to form a government in 2020 because GPS valued the country’s stability.
Abang Johari said he had indicated GPS’ support for Muhyiddin when political party leaders were summoned to Istana Negara for their views after the Pakatan Harapan government led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad collapsed.
Speaking at a meet-the-people event in Daro, Sarawak, Abang Johari said GPS had always upheld political unity among coalition partners, Borneo Post reported.
“In Peninsular Malaysia, the strongest party lost due to a split, causing us to have three prime ministers in one parliamentary term, with many projects not being implemented, and investors’ confidence being affected,” he said.
“They (political parties in the peninsula) were divided, but our party did not split as we prioritised the people,” he said.
Newcomers for 12 seats
Abang Johari said GPS was likely to name new and young faces as candidates in 12 parliamentary seats that the coalition lost in the 2018 general election, Bernama reported.
The seats are Bandar Kuching, Stampin, Mas Gading, Puncak Borneo, Lubok Antu, Saratok, Sarikei, Julau, Selangau, Sibu, Lanang and Miri. - FMT
