The Yang di-Pertuan Agong wants politicians and their supporters to keep things civil during the 15th general election (GE15).
Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah also touched on the importance of cooperation by all quarters, including political parties.
In a statement today, Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said His Majesty advised all candidates in the election to run a positive campaign and avoid hostilities.
The monarch also stressed that both candidates and their supporters should not forget good values in the heat of the campaign.
“Abstain from slander, provocation, insults and attacks by demeaning and ridiculing anyone during the campaign,” the statement said.
The king viewed such behaviour as straying from human decency and a potential source of chaos.
“In His Majesty’s view, cooperation among all quarters is important, together with respecting and upholding the judiciary, parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy by making political cooperation between parties more harmonious,” the statement added.
The king further urged all Malaysians to pray that the elections will go smoothly and safely and for the country to be blessed and protected from any disaster.
Polling for GE15 will be held on Nov 19, with nomination day on Nov 5.
His Majesty had previously expressed concern over the possibility of the polls coinciding with monsoon floods and he hoped it could be avoided.
Prior to the dissolution of Parliament, Sultan Abdullah’s reign as Agong witnessed three prime ministers and two changes in government.
During the last change in government last year, the king had pressed politicians to work together.
The government under Ismail Sabri Yaakob subsequently signed a memorandum of understanding with Pakatan Harapan - which saw several legal reforms being pushed through. - Mkini
