Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged the Election Commission (EC) to ban the use of mobile phones inside polling centres.
This is because carrying phones inside polling centres could negate a voter's ballot secrecy and encourage corruption, he said.
"Mobile phones can nullify the secrecy of a voter's ballot. Parties can use this for bribery.
"Voters can show through the mobile phone what party they have voted for, and the party can pay them (for voting)," the incumbent Langkawi MP said on Facebook today.
However, Mahathir said, reminders of such “weaknesses” had gone unheeded by the EC.
"If not fixed, bribery and fraud can happen in an election."
As such, the EC should ban voters from taking their mobile phones into the polling centres on voting day, he added.
The EC earlier today announced that the 15th parliamentary election will take place on Nov 19 (Saturday) - 14 days after the nomination day on Nov 5.
Early voting will be on Nov 15. - Mkini
